Living and teaching in Taiwan fulfills a lifetime dream for me!
Before moving into the classroom, my career in the United States was spent as a librarian at academic and public libraries. My transition into teaching naturally developed while serving a community with a large immigrant population. Recognizing their need to improve their English skills, I initiated and taught ESL conversation classes. To elevate my instruction, I returned to university to earn a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA-TESOL). Teaching those library classes became the most rewarding part of my job, prompting me to transition fully into ESL education after three years.
Driven by a desire to experience a different part of the world, I relocated to Madrid, Spain, in 2024. As a Spanish speaker, I thoroughly enjoyed serving as an English Language Teaching Assistant there for two years. While I loved living in Europe, I wanted to broaden my horizons further by moving to Asia.
Taiwan was my absolute first choice among Asian countries. My brother is married to a wonderful Taiwanese woman from Kaohsiung, so for many years I have heard about the incredible attractions of this island and have always wanted to visit. Teaching at Yang Mei High School exceeds my original dream of simply taking a vacation here. By living and teaching in Taoyuan, I have the unique opportunity to be completely immersed in the local culture—experiencing daily life, building relationships with colleagues, tasting local cuisine, and learning about traditional customs.
The faculty and staff at YMHS have been incredibly friendly, supportive, and helpful, greatly easing my transition to a new school halfway around the world. In my first three weeks here, I have deeply enjoyed collaborating with my co-teachers on lesson designs and getting to know the students, who have given me such a warm welcome and continue to impress me with their genuine desire to learn.
I look forward to deepening my relationships with colleagues and students, expanding my teaching skills, and sharing cultural experiences. As I tell my classes: I want to learn from them just as much as I hope they learn from me!
