by Huii Sung

Since 2022, YMHS has forged a robust online collaboration with MECHS in Texas, USA. Over the past year, our primary focus has been on delivering high-quality IT courses, encompassing topics such as Information Technology, IoT, and online Tinkercad. This endeavor has resulted in an enriching exchange of knowledge and experiences between our teachers and students.

As the year of 2023 came, we made the exciting decision to transition our online interactions into real-world, face-to-face encounters with our cherished counterparts. Despite a year of virtual camaraderie, it was a momentous occasion to finally meet in person. On September 26th, 2023, after a lengthy 16-hour flight, YMHS students were warmly greeted with open arms and an infectious passion for learning by the MECHS community. The bond forged online was instantly solidified in the warmth of our physical meeting.

Our journey to MECHS encompasses three vital missions. Firstly, we aim to showcase Yang Mei Senior High School and Taiwan on a global scale. Secondly, we endeavor to strengthen the bond between YMHS and MECHS, fostering a deeper sense of friendship. Lastly, we aspire to explore the potential of integrating our online collaborative course into the official YMHS curriculum, earning it the recognition of one academic credit. With these significant goals in our hearts, we are fueled by a palpable sense of excitement and determination.

Crossing Borders, Bridging Cultures:

MECHS generously opened their doors for us to observe a wide array of courses, spanning from physics and math to English literature and counseling. YMHS students fully immersed themselves in these classes, even eagerly participating in quizzes. This marked a delightful departure for our students, who found joy in the assessment process.

Furthermore, alongside the high school curriculum, MECHS provided us with a glimpse into college-level courses at ACC (Austin Community College). Here, YMHS students delved into a series of Information Technology courses, gaining firsthand experience and insight into this dynamic field through hands-on activities. It was an extraordinary opportunity for these high school students, leaving a lasting impression.

In addition to academic pursuits, our YMHS students had the privilege of witnessing their first American football game. The cheering squad and the lively band left them in awe, their eyes wide and jaws dropped in amazement. Throughout this experience, our Taiwanese delegation wore continuous smiles, capturing the essence of productivity, creativity, and vitality that permeated the learning process both on and off campus.

To fulfill the objectives of our trip, the Taiwan delegation proactively engaged in cultural exchange projects ahead of time. To provide a deeper insight into Taiwan and Yang Mei Senior High School, we spotlighted two quintessential aspects of Taiwanese culture: the Sky Lantern and Hakka Lei Cha. What set our cultural exchange apart was that we didn't just rely on presentations; we took it a step further by personally guiding our MECHS counterparts in crafting genuine sky lanterns and preparing authentic Hakka Lei Cha.

During these interactive sessions, students from both sides came together, learning from one another and enjoying themselves immensely in the process. It was a vibrant blend of cultural exchange and hands-on learning, fostering a rich tapestry of experiences and memories.

Throughout our time at MECHS, we were graciously welcomed and hosted by Dr. Sadikova, the Principal of Manor Early College High School. She took care of everything, from our transportation and accommodation to ensuring we had an enjoyable itinerary. Additionally, our dedicated guides during the trip were Mr. Gervais, the Physics teacher, and Mr. Fisher, the Chemistry teacher. They went above and beyond to make us feel at ease and treated us with kindness, creating an atmosphere that truly felt like home.
