CGS 2-day Visit

A Celebration of Cultural Exchange and Friendship-Building

Amidst chilly and windy weather, a group of 22 American students and 3 teachers from the Center for Global Studies (CGS) in Norwalk, Connecticut, United States of America arrived at Yangmei Senior High School (YMHS) for their two-day visit of culture and language exchange. Despite the harsh weather conditions, the warmth of the school's welcome enveloped the American visitors from the moment they arrived.

Day 1: Embracing CGS with YMHS warm hospitality

At first, the CGS students and teachers were greeted by a group of YMHS student representatives holding up placards with messages of welcome. The group proceeded to take a group picture in front of the school's newly built library, which would serve as a backdrop for many memorable moments throughout their visit.

The opening ceremony took place in the Exhibition Center, where representatives from both schools delivered speeches about the importance of cultural exchange and the warm welcome extended to the visitors. The CGS visitors then proceeded to the newly built school gym, where our school’s PE teachers introduced them to the various sports equipment and facilities.

In the auditorium, CGS learned about Chinese yo-yo and tried their hand at playing them with their YMHS peers. They also had the opportunity to experience traditional Taiwanese snacks such as candied haws (糖葫蘆) and cotton candy (棉花糖).

Traditional Taiwanese lunch was served in the conference room, where the visitors had the chance to witness the school culture via its videos and mingle with YMHS students and teachers. Other YMHS students took this chance to have pictures with the CGS, capturing moments that would last a lifetime.

The afternoon was spent exploring two different learning areas – ICT (Arduino programming) and school culture in Taiwan and the United States. Some CGS students surprised their YMHS peers by speaking Chinese fluently in their presentation, showcasing their dedication to learning about a new culture.

The day ended with a visit to the night market, where the principal treated the CGS and YMHS teachers to a feast at a restaurant. Meanwhile, YMHS students explored the night market with their CGS peers, trying out various traditional snacks.

day 2: Fostering Friendly Ties through YMHS Challenges

The second day began with another warm welcome from YMHS student representatives, who escorted the CGS visitors to the Conference room for an orientation about the various science challenges. They were then divided into different groups where they explored interesting and cool science experiments featuring Taiwanese culture such as the Pingxi sky lantern and aiyu jelly in Taiwan. In the afternoon, Taiwanese students initiated a friendly game of badminton and table tennis to their American peers.

The day ended with a closing ceremony at the Exhibition Center, where speeches were given by both sides and the CGS students showcased their newfound Mandarin Chinese skills. A slideshow of the day's events was presented, and the American students performed a dance for their Taiwanese hosts. At the end of the ceremony, the principal presented the visitors with souvenirs ranging from a tote bag featuring the school's international logo and a notebook. One student from CGS even expressed his love for Taiwan and his sadness for leaving, while other students and teachers hugged and took pictures with their Taiwanese friends; some even shedding tears.

As the CGS visitors left the school gates on a bus, the Taiwanese students waved passionately and went outside the school gate to bid their farewell. The two-day visit was a celebration of cultural exchange and a testament to the warmth and hospitality of the Taiwanese people.
