A Fun-Filled and Educational Summer Camp at YMHS: Exploring Culture and Technology

Summer is a time for students to take a break from the traditional classroom setting and engage in exciting and educational activities. At Yang Mei Senior High School (YMHS), Class 102 recently had the opportunity to participate in a four-day summer camp that combined culture and technology in a unique and enriching way.

Culture Camp: Unveiling the Beauty of Sky Lanterns

During the first leg of the summer camp, Class 102 was divided into two groups. The first group had the privilege of delving into the rich cultural heritage of Taiwan, specifically exploring the captivating world of sky lanterns. Teachers Young, Anderson, and Jessy, with their creative approach, introduced students to this traditional Taiwanese practice.

To make learning about sky lanterns engaging and immersive, collaborative games were organized. Students eagerly participated in activities like jigsaw puzzles, unlocking key vocabulary, and delving into the history behind these luminous wonders. This interactive approach allowed students to not only learn about the culture but also to connect with it on a deeper level.

As the culture camp drew to a close, students were tasked with a creative challenge: designing their very own mini sky lanterns that mirrored Taiwan's lucky charms. Each student poured their creativity into their designs, resulting in a colorful array of mini lanterns. To cap it all off, students created short videos, lasting one to two minutes, to discuss their designs and share their experiences. This fun and insightful activity took place in YMHS's bilingual classroom.

Technology Camp: Diving into the World of IOT and MQTT

While one group was immersed in the world of sky lanterns, the other group embarked on a technological journey exploring the Internet of Things (IOT) and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT). These cutting-edge topics were introduced through a combination of informative videos, hands-on computer coding, and vocabulary exercises.

Throughout the technology camp, students not only learned about IOT and MQTT but also put their newfound knowledge to the test with coding exercises. They gained practical experience that demystified the world of technology, making it accessible and engaging. Moreover, each pair of students had the opportunity to present their reflections on the lessons learned, showcasing their understanding of the material.

One highlight of the technology camp was the demonstration of an online rock-paper-scissors game using IOT and MQTT. This interactive activity brought the theoretical concepts to life, allowing students to witness the real-world applications of technology. Facilitated by the computer teacher, Lee Ann, Keith, and Lea, this science camp took place in YMHS's state-of-the-art computer classroom.

A Balanced Experience: Switching Gears

To ensure a well-rounded educational experience, the two groups switched roles after the first two days. This allowed all students to acquire both cultural insights and technological skills, broadening their horizons and enhancing their learning journey.

The four-day summer camp at YMHS was a testament to the school's commitment to holistic education. By combining cultural immersion with technology exploration, students not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed crucial skills in collaboration, creativity, and adaptability. This memorable experience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the students of Class 102, equipping them with a diverse skill set that will serve them well in their academic pursuits and beyond.

In conclusion, the YMHS summer camp for Class 102 was a resounding success, showcasing the school's dedication to providing students with a dynamic and well-rounded education. It demonstrated that education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms, encompassing culture, technology, and real-world application. The students of Class 102 now carry with them a unique blend of cultural appreciation and technological prowess, setting the stage for their continued growth and success.
